William Ford Gibson is an American and Canadian speculative fiction writer and essayist, widely credited with pioneering the science fiction subgenre known as cyberpunk, a label from which he has repeatedly distanced himself. He began his writing career in the late 1970s, and he was born in 1948. His early works were noir, near-future stories, and his novel Neuromancer became the defining book of cyberpunk.
