American Literature
Thomas Lanier Williams III, known by his pen name Tennessee Williams, was an American playwright and screenwriter. Along with his contemporaries Eugene O'Neill and Arthur Miller, he is considered among the three foremost playwrights of twentieth-century American drama. Born in 1911 and dying in 1983, he wrote his first play as a young man. His work gained little traction until the success of The Glass Menagerie in 1944, and his next plays, including A Streetcar Named Desire, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and The Night of the Iguana, were also widely acclaimed. A Streetcar Named Desire is often listed among the finest American plays of the twentieth century.
