Takeda Izumo II

East and Southeast Asian Literature

Takeda Izumo II was a Japanese playwright of the joruri puppet theater and one of the three collaborators who wrote Kanadehon Chushingura in 1748. Working with Miyoshi Shoraku and Namiki Sosuke, also known as Namiki Senryu, he was responsible for the three works that together make up the golden period of writing for joruri: Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami (1746), Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura (1747) and Chushingura (1748), an eleven act history play in the jidamono style. Together these three plays are regarded as the high point of writing for the puppet stage.
