FAQs

Is the English Gitanjali a direct translation of the Bengali book?

It is a selection of 103 prose poems by Tagore himself; only 53 come from the Bengali Gitanjali.

No. The English Song Offerings of 1912 holds 103 prose poems, which are Tagore's own translations, but only 53 of them come from the original Bengali Gitanjali. The other 50 were taken from his other collections. The translations were often radical, leaving out or altering large parts of the poems, and in one case joining two separate poems into one.
