Luigi Pirandello

Italian Literature

Luigi Pirandello was an Italian dramatist, novelist, poet and short story writer who lived from 1867 to 1936, most noted for his plays, and was awarded the 1934 Nobel Prize in Literature for what the citation called his bold and ingenious revival of dramatic and scenic art. His output includes novels, hundreds of short stories and about forty plays, some written in Sicilian, and his tragic farces, which repeatedly question the instability of identity and the boundary between illusion and reality, are often regarded as forerunners of the Theatre of the Absurd.

FAQs

Why did Pirandello call his collected plays Naked Masks?

The title signals his lifelong concern with identity, masks and what lies beneath them.

Between 1918 and 1935 Pirandello published his many dramas under the collective title Maschere nude, which means Naked Masks. The Nobel Foundation's biography calls the title programmatic: Pirandello was always preoccupied with the problem of identity, and in his view the self exists only in relation to others and consists of changing facets that hide an inscrutable abyss.
