Jerome K. Jerome

British and Irish Literature

Jerome Klapka Jerome was an English writer and humorist, best known for the comic travelogue Three Men in a Boat, published in 1889. His other works include the essay collections Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow and Second Thoughts of an Idle Fellow, and the sequel Three Men on the Bummel. His easy, digressive comic voice made him one of the most popular English humorists of his day. He was born in Walsall in the English Midlands. His family struggled with poverty at times, and after his father died in 1871 he tried various occupations, including a clerical post and three years as an actor, before he began writing in his twenties and found increasing success.
