Jaroslav Hašek

Russian and Slavic Literature

Jaroslav Hasek was a Czech writer, humorist, satirist and journalist, born in 1883 and died in 1923, remembered chiefly for his unfinished novel The Good Soldier Svejk, a satire on the ineptitude of authority figures set among soldiers in the First World War. Hasek led a colorful and unsettled life as a self-described bohemian and, in turn, an anarchist and then a communist, and he wrote the bulk of Svejk in the final years before his early death. The novel has since been translated into roughly sixty languages, making it the most translated work in Czech literature, and its title character's name has entered common usage as a byword for a shrewd, apparently foolish figure who subverts authority through feigned incompetence.

FAQs

How did Jaroslav Hašek's own war experience shape The Good Soldier Švejk?

His own service in the Austro-Hungarian army and later the Red Army fed the irony and black humor of the novel.

Jaroslav Hašek based the novel on his own experience of the First World War. He served in the Austro-Hungarian infantry on the eastern front in what is now Ukraine, was soon captured by the Russians, and after time in a prisoner-of-war camp joined the Czechoslovak Legion. After the Bolshevik revolution of 1917 he sympathized with the Red Army and joined its ranks, which former legionaries saw as a serious betrayal. He worked in Siberia as a de facto communist official before returning to Prague. A scholar at the Institute of Czech Literature quoted by Radio Prague places Švejk alongside Don Quixote and Anna Karenina as a character who has left the original book and lives his own life.
