With Fire and Sword

Historical Fiction and Romance

With Fire and Sword is a historical novel by the Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz, published in Polish in 1884 under the title Ogniem i mieczem, the first volume of the trilogy known simply as The Trilogy, followed by The Deluge in 1886 and Fire in the Steppe. Originally serialized in Polish newspapers, the novel is set in the seventeenth-century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the Khmelnytsky Uprising, and its popularity was such that it became required reading in Polish schools and was translated into English and numerous other European languages. Written during Poland's period of partition and political non-existence as an independent state, the Trilogy served as a vehicle for Polish national feeling, and With Fire and Sword remains one of the most widely read works of Polish historical fiction.
