British and Irish Literature

Henry Fielding was an English writer and judge known for the use of humour and satire in his works. His famous novels include Shamela of 1741, Joseph Andrews of 1742, The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling of 1749 and Amelia of 1751. Together with Samuel Richardson he is seen as one of the founders of the English novel. As well as a novelist he was a playwright, known for satirical comedies such as The Author's Farce, Tom Thumb and The Tragedy of Tragedies. He also played an important role in the history of law enforcement in the United Kingdom, using his authority as a magistrate to found the Bow Street Runners, London's first professional police force.
