Hiram Gilmore Bates III, known as Harry Bates, was an American science fiction editor and writer. His short story Farewell to the Master, published in 1940, was the basis of the science fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still, released in 1951. He was born in 1900 and died in 1981. He was born in Pittsburgh and worked in the 1920s for the publisher William Clayton as editor of adventure pulp magazines. Astounding Science Fiction grew out of his suggestions, and he edited it from January 1930 until March 1933, when Clayton went bankrupt.
