Original Language FAQs
What advice from his father does Nick Carraway say shapes how he judges people?
His father told him to remember that not everyone has had the advantages he has had; Nick says he therefore reserves all judgements.
Nick Carraway opens the novel by recalling: "In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since." The advice was: "Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had." Nick says that he understood his father to mean more than that and that, in consequence, he is inclined to reserve all judgements.
