Viy

Speculative Fiction

Viy is a horror novella by Russian writer Nikolai Gogol, first published in 1835 as part of his story collection Mirgorod. It follows a group of seminary students who take shelter with an old woman revealed to be a witch, and centers on one student's fatal encounter with supernatural forces after her death, including the monstrous titular creature Viy. Although Gogol's own author's note claimed the story drew on folk legend, scholars generally regard the character of Viy as Gogol's own invention rather than genuine traditional folklore.
