Musashi, published in Japanese under the title Miyamoto Musashi, is a historical novel by the Japanese writer Eiji Yoshikawa, serialized in the newspaper Asahi Shimbun between 1935 and 1939 and later compiled into a single work. It is a fictionalized account of the life of the swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, opening in the aftermath of the Battle of Sekigahara, when the defeated, wounded fighter then known as Shinmen Takezo is persuaded by the Buddhist monk Takuan to abandon his violent past and remake himself, adopting the name Musashi. The novel follows Musashi as he travels across Japan for years afterward, founding his own style of swordsmanship, dueling rival warriors and rival schools, training students, and navigating several unresolved romantic entanglements, all while pursuing a deeper spiritual and philosophical mastery alongside his physical skill, a pursuit that culminates in his legendary duel against the swordsman Sasaki Kojiro on the island of Ganryu. With an estimated 120 million copies sold, the novel ranks among the best-selling works of fiction in history, and it has inspired numerous adaptations across other media, including the acclaimed Samurai Trilogy of films made between 1954 and 1956 and the long-running manga Vagabond, extending the reach of Yoshikawa's account of Musashi far beyond Japan itself.
