The Duino Elegies (German: Duineser Elegien) are a collection of ten elegies written by the Bohemian-Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke. He began the elegies in 1912 while a guest of Princess Marie von Thurn und Taxis at Duino Castle on the Adriatic Sea; the poems were dedicated to the Princess upon their publication in 1923. During this ten-year period, the elegies languished incomplete for long stretches of time as Rilke had frequent bouts with severe depression, some of which were related to the events of World War I and being conscripted into military service. Original Language FAQs
Why did the Duino Elegies take about ten years to finish?
Depression, wartime conscription and long gaps kept Rilke from the poems until a burst of work in February 1922.
Rilke began the Duino Elegies in January 1912 at Duino Castle, but he worked on them only sporadically. He wrote parts of them in 1913 and finished the Fourth Elegy in 1915, the day before he was conscripted into the Austro-Hungarian army. The work stalled during World War I, partly because of his severe depression, and he did not return to it until a few years after the war ended. In February 1922, in a sudden burst of writing he described as a boundless storm, a hurricane of the spirit, he completed the cycle at the Château de Muzot in Switzerland.
