Poetry

Complete Tang Poems, also known as Quan Tangshi, is the largest collection of Tang poetry, containing some 49,000 poems by more than 2,200 poets. It was commissioned in 1705 at the direction of the Qing dynasty Kangxi Emperor and published under his name, and it is the major reservoir of surviving Tang dynasty poems, from which the pre-eminent shorter anthology, Three Hundred Tang Poems, is largely drawn. FAQs

Is the Complete Tang Poems really complete?

No. It is the largest Tang collection but is neither complete nor completely reliable.

Not entirely. Although the Complete Tang Poems is the largest compilation of Tang poems, with some 49,000 poems by more than 2,200 poets, the source describes it as neither complete nor completely reliable. The work was done in some haste, and the editors did not justify or even indicate their own choices of texts or variant readings. It was compiled after the Kangxi Emperor issued an edict in 1705 to Cao Yin, a trusted imperial bondservant, commanding him to compile and publish the surviving Tang shi poems.
