Youth and School Fiction

Novel forms defined by a child, adolescent or young-adult readership, or by a school or university setting as the story's own defining stage of life. Includes children's literature and the picture book format aimed at young children, the coming-of-age story and its German backfischroman variant aimed specifically at adolescent girls, young adult fiction and young adult romance literature, new adult fiction's slightly older readership, gay teen fiction's own young-adult audience, and the campus and varsity novel and school story built around student life at a school or university. Excludes youth-market romance and genre fiction defined primarily by its commercial category rather than its readership's age, grouped instead under Popular and Genre Novel Forms.
