The Novel and Its Forms

Gokan is a variety of Japanese woodblock printed literature within the broader kusazoshi picture book category, produced from around 1805 into the late nineteenth century. It succeeded kibyoshi, whose adult themes changed significantly in content and style after the censorship imposed by the Kansei Reforms, while keeping much the same physical form, with large images and whitespace filled with narrative text and dialogue composed largely in kana.
