Weird Fiction Subgenres

Subgenres of the weird fiction tradition, the late nineteenth and early twentieth century mode that reimagines conventional supernatural horror around the unknowable and the cosmic rather than a named ghost or monster, and its literary descendants. Includes the founding Weird Fiction genre itself, Lovecraft's own Cthulhu Mythos and the cosmic horror it defined, the New Weird movement that reworked the tradition with later speculative-fiction technique, Bizarro Fiction's absurdist and grotesque descendants, the classical Grotesque and Grotesquerie modes, the pulp-era Weird Menace tradition, the erotic-grotesque Ero Guro genre, and the Chinese zhiguai xiaoshuo tradition of tales of the strange and anomalous that plays the same role in Chinese literature.
