Solaris

Solaris is a science fiction novel by the Polish writer Stanislaw Lem, published in Polish in 1961, considered one of Lem's best-known works. The novel follows scientists aboard a research station orbiting the alien planet Solaris, whose surface is covered by a single sentient ocean that resists every human attempt at communication or understanding, and centers on the psychologist Kris Kelvin, who arrives at the station to find the ocean has begun producing physical simulacra drawn from the crew's own repressed memories, including a manifestation of Kelvin's deceased lover. Lem deliberately chose a vast, non-humanoid ocean as his alien intelligence specifically to avoid the pitfalls of anthropomorphism common in first-contact fiction, and the novel uses the crew's repeated failure to make sense of the ocean's behavior to question whether genuine communication with a truly alien intelligence is possible at all.
