Story of Your Life

Story of Your Life is a science fiction novella by American writer Ted Chiang, first published in the 1998 anthology Starlight 2 and later collected in Chiang's 2002 book Stories of Your Life and Others. The novella follows a linguist recruited to communicate with an alien species after their spacecraft appear on Earth, and interweaves this first contact narrative with memories addressed to her own daughter. Its central themes are linguistics and determinism, exploring how learning the aliens' language reshapes the narrator's own experience of time. The novella won the 1999 Nebula Award for Best Novella and the 1999 Theodore Sturgeon Award, and was later adapted into the 2016 film Arrival.
