Romantasy, or romantic fantasy, is a subgenre of fantasy fiction that fuses the fantasy genre with the conventions of romance fiction, so that the plot depends on a central romantic relationship as much as on its fantastical setting. The genre spans stories where the fantasy elements dominate and stories where the romance itself is the main draw, and commentators have noted that the line between the two has largely blurred. Its typical concerns are social, political and romantic relationships, often set in secondary worlds with inborn magical talents, speaking intelligent animals and egalitarian societies. The commercial success of authors such as Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros in the 2010s led major publishers to create dedicated imprints for the subgenre.
