Fairy Tale and Fable

The fairy tale and its literary descendants, the short-form folklore genre featuring magic, enchantment and mythical or fanciful beings, together with the forms that directly rework or descend from it. Includes the fairy tale itself, the literary fairy tale written by a single identifiable author rather than passed down orally, fairy tale parody, the novelistic fairytale-fantasy descendant, and the French conte tradition of short witty or fantastic tales that the fairy tale later absorbed and that remained popular through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries before merging with the short story. Excludes myth-retelling and mythic-fiction subgenres that draw on a specific mythology rather than the fairy tale form itself, grouped instead under Fantasy Subgenres.
