Romantic fantasy, popularly known by the portmanteau romantasy, is a subgenre of the broader fantasy fiction and romance fiction genres that combines fantasy with many of the conventions of the romance genre. Social, political and romantic relationships sit at the center of its storytelling, and the romantic plot must be integral to the narrative rather than a subplot that could be removed without undermining the story's logic. Publishers have opened dedicated imprints for the subgenre following the commercial success of authors such as Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros.
