Munshi Premchand

South Asian Literature

Munshi Premchand, born Dhanpat Rai Srivastava in 1880 near Banaras and died in 1936, was an Indian writer regarded as a foremost pioneer of modern Hindi and Urdu literature. Writing under the pen name Premchand, he authored more than three hundred short stories and over a dozen novels, including Godaan, Karmabhoomi and Gaban, that portrayed caste hierarchies and the hardships faced by women and laborers in rural and small-town India with an unusually direct social realism for his time. He is regarded as one of the most celebrated writers of the Indian subcontinent, and his short stories, many collected in the volume Mansarovar, remain widely read staples of Hindi and Urdu literary education.
