A body of verse fables by Jean de La Fontaine, published in several volumes across 1668 to 1694 under the general title Fables. Drawing on Aesop, Indian sources and other traditions both Western and Eastern, La Fontaine reworked them into elegant French free verse with sharp wit and pointed social observation, and the collection remains a cornerstone of French literary education.
