Estebanillo González

Estebanillo González is a Spanish picaresque novel first published in Antwerp in 1646 and again in Madrid in 1652, presented as the autobiography of a rogue. Its narrator serves a series of distinguished masters across Europe as a soldier and messenger during the Thirty Years War, witnessing events including the Huguenot rebellions in France, and takes part in a campaign under the Cardinal Infante Ferdinand of Spain that advances through French provinces to threaten Paris in 1636. The novel is regarded as one of the last great achievements of Spanish Baroque literature.
