Comic and urban fiction printed in Japan during the Edo period, among them the sharebon, books of manners set in the pleasure quarters, and the kokkeibon, comic novels of ordinary city life. A genre belongs here when its cited article names it as a genre of Edo period Japanese fiction. It excludes the satirical sermon books already grouped with satire and parody forms. These genres grew up in the cities of Edo period Japan, in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, among townspeople who read for amusement, and a genre is placed here by the period and setting its cited article gives for it.
