Nawal El Saadawi was an Egyptian writer, physician, psychiatrist and feminist activist, born in 1931 and died in 2021, whose fiction and nonfiction alike confronted sexuality, patriarchy, social class and colonialism as they bore on the lives of women across the Arab world. As founder and president of the Arab Women's Solidarity Association and the author of influential works including Women and Sex (1972) and the novel Woman at Point Zero (1975), she became one of the most prominent and internationally recognized voices challenging oppressive cultural and legal practices affecting women in Egypt and beyond. Her activism repeatedly brought her into conflict with the Egyptian state, including a period of imprisonment in 1981, but she continued writing, practicing medicine and teaching at universities internationally until her death.
