Shaaban bin Robert, also known as Shaaban Robert, was a Tanzanian poet, author and essayist who lived from 1909 to 1962 and is celebrated as one of the greatest Swahili thinkers, intellectuals and writers in East Africa, honored as the national poet of Tanzania and often called the poet laureate of Swahili or the Father of Swahili literature for his efforts to preserve Tanzanian verse traditions.
