Mo Yan, the pen name of Guan Moye, is a Chinese writer born in 1955 who gained early attention for his 1984 novella A Transparent Radish and rose to international fame with his 1986 novel Red Sorghum, whose first two parts were adapted into the Golden Bear winning film Red Sorghum in 1988. He was awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature for work that the Swedish Academy said merges folk tales, history and the contemporary with hallucinatory realism.

Biography
Mo Yan was born as Guan Moye in February 1955 into a peasant family in Ping'an Village, Gaomi Township, northeast of Shandong Province, China.
Awards and honours
In 2012, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his work which "with hallucinatory realism merges folk tales, history and the contemporary".
