Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (1896-1940) was an American novelist and short story writer regarded as the defining literary voice of the Jazz Age. His novel The Great Gatsby (1925), now considered among the greatest achievements in American fiction, sold modestly in his lifetime and won wide critical acclaim only after his death; his other novels include This Side of Paradise (1920) and Tender Is the Night (1934). Fitzgerald was one of the two most notable members of the Lost Generation, the community of American expatriate writers centered on 1920s Paris, where he was a close friend of Ernest Hemingway.
