The Words (Les Mots, 1963) is Jean-Paul Sartre's autobiography of his own childhood, an unsentimental account of a bookish, fatherless boy's discovery of literature as a kind of religion, and of his own later disillusionment with that discovery. It is widely credited with tipping the Swedish Academy toward awarding him the Nobel Prize the following year, a prize he then declined.
