And Quiet Flows the Don is a four volume novel by Russian writer Mikhail Sholokhov, with the first three volumes written between 1925 and 1932 and serialized in the Soviet magazine Oktyabr, and the fourth volume completed in 1940. It portrays the lives of Don Cossack communities through the upheavals of the First World War, the Russian Revolution and the Russian Civil War. The novel is considered one of the major works of twentieth century world literature, and it was cited when Sholokhov was awarded the 1965 Nobel Prize in Literature.
