Sturm und Drang

Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress) was a proto-Romantic movement in German literature and music active from the late 1760s to the early 1780s. Reacting against Enlightenment rationalism, its writers prized intense subjective emotion, individual genius and nature over reasoned restraint. The young Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's 1774 novel The Sorrows of Young Werther, a story of hopeless love and suicide, became the movement's most widely read work before Goethe himself moved toward the classicism of his later Weimar years.
