Popular fiction sold cheaply in series or parts, with plots of crime, danger and shocking events, such as the British penny dreadful, the American dime novel and the sensation novel of Victorian Britain. A genre belongs here when its cited article describes it as cheap serial publication or as fiction built on sensational material. It excludes the detective and thriller subgenres, which sit in their own groups, and the satire and parody forms. These genres were written for a wide, mostly working or middle class readership and sold in inexpensive instalments or editions, and a genre is placed here by the publishing form or sensational material its cited article gives for it.
