Broad Poetic Kinds and Classical Modes

The wide kinds of poetry that cover many particular forms, together with older named modes, including poetry itself, lyric poetry as the expression of one speaker's personal feeling, the long poem of considerable length, the iambus of ancient Greek invective and sentimental poetry aimed at stirring emotion. A genre belongs here when its cited article describes a broad kind or mode of poetry rather than a form tied to one rule, one subject or one occasion. It excludes the narrower groups of constrained, humorous, pastoral and memorial verse.
