Sayings, Proverbs and Riddles

Short compact forms that pass on wisdom or pose puzzles, including gnomic poetry, which puts meaningful sayings into verse to aid the memory, the proverb as a simple traditional saying that expresses a truth based on common sense or experience, and the riddle, a statement or question with a double or veiled meaning put forth as a puzzle to be solved. A form belongs here when its cited article describes it as a saying, maxim or puzzle. It excludes longer didactic poems and the fable.
