Prison literature is the literary genre of works written by an author held in unwilling confinement, whether in a prison, a jail, or under house arrest. Its writing may be directly about imprisonment, simply informed by the experience of it, or only incidentally composed while its author was confined, and it can take the form of memoir, other nonfiction, or fiction.
