Influenced by names the tradition a literary form grew out of. Wikipedia notes the term sonnet "derives from the Italian word sonetto (lit. little song), from the Latin word sonus, lit. sound," a lineage stretching from Latin through Italian before the form reached English poets. This dimension traces a form back to the earlier language or tradition that shaped it.
