Balagtasan is a traditional Filipino form of debate conducted in verse, named for the poet Francisco Balagtas. A standard balagtasan involves three participants, a lakandiwa who moderates and introduces the topic, and two mambabalagtas who argue opposing positions entirely in rhymed verse, judged on the logic of their argument, wit, theatricality and entertainment value. The genre was formalized on March 28, 1924, when writer Lope K. Santos proposed a poetic contest to mark Balagtas's birth anniversary, and it was inaugurated on April 6, 1924, at the Instituto de Mujeres in Manila with Jose Corazon de Jesus debating Florentino Collantes under Santos's moderation; the pairing's popularity led to an unscripted rematch in October 1925, after which de Jesus was declared the first Hari ng Balagtasan, king of Balagtasan.
