Aattakatha is a literary genre in the Malayalam language consisting of the librettos used for Kathakali, the classical Indian dance drama of Kerala. The word literally means story for dancing and acting. Its narrative framework is built from quatrains in Sanskrit meters with heavily Sanskritized diction, while its dialogue portions are made up of padas that are set to raga and tala and rendered through gesture and body movement by actors as musicians sing behind them.
