Abbey Theatre is Ireland's national theatre, founded in Dublin in 1904 by W. B. Yeats and Lady Gregory out of the Irish Literary Theatre they had established in 1897 to bring Irish plays and performers to a national stage. It grew directly out of the Irish Literary Revival, staged early work by Yeats, Lady Gregory and John Millington Synge, and continues to operate as a producing theatre in Dublin today.
