Influenced by traces an author back to the earlier writing they reacted to or built on. Wikipedia notes Austen's works "are implicit critiques of the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century," a tradition she pushed directly against rather than simply followed. This dimension shows which earlier writing shaped a given author's own approach.
