Elias Lönnrot

Scandinavian and Nordic Literature

Elias Lonnrot was a Finnish physician, philologist and folklorist, born in Sammatti in 1802 and died in 1884, remembered above all for compiling the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic. On repeated fieldwork trips across Finland, Russian Karelia and the Kola Peninsula, he collected traditional oral poetry sung by rural performers, then combined and edited it into a single continuous work, publishing an Old Kalevala in 1835 and a much-expanded New Kalevala in 1849. Beyond his literary work, Lonnrot made significant contributions to Finnish lexicography and botany, including the first scientific botanical text written in Finnish rather than Latin. He is remembered as one of the pivotal figures in preserving and elevating Finnish cultural heritage during the nineteenth century, at a time when Finnish national identity was still forming.

FAQs

How did Elias Lönnrot find the time and money to collect the poetry behind the Kalevala?

He took long leaves from his work as a district doctor, and the Finnish Literature Society, which he helped found in 1831, paid for his collecting trips.

Lönnrot worked as a district doctor in Kajaani in eastern Finland and began collecting folk tales from rural people in the late 1820s. In 1831 the Finnish Literature Society was founded, with Lönnrot as one of its founders, and the society gave him financial support for his collecting. He took extended leaves of absence from his doctor's office and toured the countryside of Finland, Lapland and nearby parts of Russian Karelia. The trips led to the first Kalevala in 1835 and 1836 and an expanded edition in 1849.
