Ferenc Molnar, born Ferenc Neumann and sometimes called Franz Molnar in English, was a Hungarian-born author, stage director, dramatist and poet. He is widely regarded as Hungary's most celebrated and controversial playwright. Born in 1878 and dying in 1952, he wrote plays that were performed well beyond Hungary. His primary aim in writing was to entertain by transforming his personal experiences into literary works of art. He never connected to any one literary movement, although he used the precepts of naturalism, neo-romanticism and expressionism as they suited him.
