Joaquin Gutierrez Mangel was a Costa Rican writer who won multiple awards and whose children's book Cocorí has been translated into ten languages. In addition to writing children's books, he was a chess champion, war correspondent, journalist, story-teller, translator and professor. He was born in 1918 and died in 2000. He was also a communist activist, and his life and career combined literature with chess, journalism and political commitment.
