Gabriela Mistral

Iberian and Latin American Literature

Gabriela Mistral, the pen name of Lucila Godoy Alcayaga, was a Chilean poet, diplomat, journalist and educator, born in 1889 and died in 1957. In 1945 she became the first Latin American author to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, recognized for lyric poetry that the Swedish Academy said had made her name a symbol of the loftiest aspirations of the entire Latin American world. Her poetry explored themes of nature, love, motherhood and grief, and drew on a cultural identity shaped by both Indigenous American and European influences, while her long career as a diplomat and educator carried her through Latin America, the United States and Europe on behalf of literacy and cultural exchange.
