Ding Ling, formerly romanized as Ting Ling, was the pen name of Jiang Bingzhi, who was known for her feminist and socialist realist literature. Born in 1904 and dying in 1986, she wrote Miss Sophia's Diary in 1927, a confessional fictional diary that made her name as a modern woman writer in China. She was part of leftist literary circles connected to the Chinese Communist Party and was imprisoned by the Kuomintang for her politics. She later became a leader in the literary community at the communist base area of Yan'an, held posts in the early government of the People's Republic of China, and was awarded the Soviet Union's Stalin second prize for literature in 1951.
