Benvenuto Cellini

Italian Literature

Benvenuto Cellini was an Italian goldsmith, sculptor and author, born on 3 November 1500 and died on 13 February 1571. His best-known extant works include the Cellini Salt Cellar, the sculpture of Perseus with the Head of Medusa, and his autobiography, which has been described as one of the most important documents of the sixteenth century. He is therefore known both as an artist of the Italian Renaissance and as the writer of one of its most vivid first-person accounts.
