Emilio Salgari was an Italian author who made his name with swashbuckling adventure stories and is counted as a pioneer of science fiction in his country. His large body of work was for a long time read more widely in Italy than the poems of Dante Alighieri. He lived from 1862 to 1911. He is still among the forty most translated Italian authors, and many of his most popular novels have been adapted as comics, animated series and feature films. He is considered the father of Italian adventure fiction and of Italian pop culture.
